A selection of possible destinations. Innsbruck is assumed as the starting point and the tours last around eight to nine hours. The pick up and end point are of course planned individually.

The destination board

Guide prices for four people. Every additional person costs 50 euro. The price covers the vehicle, the driver and private guiding in the cities and at particular sights, provided I am allowed to guide there.

  1. Bolzano

    Over the Brenner Pass to Bolzano, with a guided walk through the Laubengasse, the cathedral and Walther Square.

    On this tour: cable car up to the Ritten, Runkelstein Castle, the Ötzi Museum, the Messner Mountain Museum, a winery tour.

    Via the A12 or via Lofer to Salzburg, including a guided walk through the old town, the cathedral, Mirabell and the Mozart house.

    On this tour: the fortress, a boat trip on the Salzach, Hellbrunn Palace and its zoo, the Stiegl Brauwelt, the Müllnerbräu, a walk over the Mönchsberg, or Lake Fuschl instead.

    Via Bregenz to Meersburg, including the ferry across to Mainau Island.

These tours are the ones I drive most often. Every one of them can be moved, shortened or swapped for another idea.

History and food

Austria, and Innsbruck in particular, is known for two things: a long history and wonderful food. The pastries especially are world famous. This tour covers both. We stroll through the city and visit the famous buildings and viewpoints with a local guide, and we stop to enjoy apple strudel, gelato or chocolate with a coffee, a hot chocolate or a soft drink. If that is too sweet, we swap one stop for a Tyrolean ham and cheese platter, maybe with a Schnapsl or a small beer. The tour changes with the season, the day of the week and the weather, but it is always interesting.

Innsbruck highlights

We explore Innsbruck, which is the most sensible tour you could choose for a full day in the city. We see the ski jump arena at Bergisel, stop at Ambras Castle where your guide comes inside with you, and drive to the north side of the Inn valley for a photo stop at the Hungerburg. Back in the centre you get a guided city walk, with the tomb of Maximilian I inside the court church as the highlight.

Eagle's Nest, the Kehlsteinhaus

The famous Eagle's Nest, starting and ending in Innsbruck. The course of the day depends on the ticket time slots. It is a relatively long drive because much of it runs on country roads, but there are some amazing views along the way. As part of a trip from or to Salzburg the tour costs 660 euro.

Linderhof Palace and the Highline 179

History and a little excitement in one day. From Innsbruck we drive to Bavaria to Linderhof Palace, a gem built by Ludwig II, the same king who had Neuschwanstein built. There you enjoy a guided tour of the palace. Afterwards we drive through a beautiful green valley, past Lake Plansee, to Reutte, where you can experience the Highline 179 suspension bridge. It connects two parts of a 750 year old fortress and takes you a step back into the Middle Ages. Entrance fees are not included.

Dolomites, Val Gardena and Lake Carezza

Over the Brenner Pass road, for 700 years the most used road between Italy and Bavaria. We pass vineyards and apple trees before climbing the mountain road to 2218 metres, then down into a marvellous landscape between these famous mountains. A fixed stop is Lake Carezza, and on the way back Vipiteno, a really nice town.

Achensee, the Isar valley and Mittenwald

From Innsbruck to Lake Achensee, with a boat cruise from and to Pertisau, then a gorgeous narrow toll road through a protected valley along the Isar creek. We stop in Mittenwald, a Bavarian village you have to see, with painted houses, a nice pedestrian zone, small shops, good cafés and its famous violin workshops. On the way home we pass Seefeld.

Lake Braies and Vipiteno

Over the Italian border to Lake Braies, ringed by the Dolomites. It is impossible to count the pictures of this lake on the internet, but seeing it is simply different. Walking around it takes about two hours. On the way back a stop in Vipiteno, a nice and really old town with a beautiful pedestrian zone, a mixture of medieval and Italian flair.

Krimml waterfalls and Kitzbühel

On the way there we stop in Kitzbühel, every year host to the most dangerous downhill race of the winter season, and every year the place that welcomes Arnold Schwarzenegger. The old part of town is worth a coffee and a few good pictures too. Then the biggest waterfalls in Austria at Krimml, and back over a mountain pass road and a stretch of the Zillertal, one of the most famous winter sports areas we have.

Timmelsjoch and the Jaufen Pass

This round trip is limited in time, because the road is closed during the winter months, but once it is open the drive is a great experience. From Innsbruck through the beautiful Ötztal, over the Timmelsjoch road at 2474 metres, down into Italy and the Passeier valley, from there over the Jaufen Pass to Vipiteno and back to Innsbruck. For people who love great views, lots of mountains and many, many narrow bends.

The Hintertux Glacier

The glacier at Hintertux is the only place in Austria where alpine skiing is possible on all 365 days of the year. We reach an altitude of 3250 metres. From there you have the choice: the large natural ice palace with its guided tour, a real adventure, or, as an alternative, the only marble cave in the Central Alps, a place you really should see. Please note that this tour is not possible with physical limitations.

Herrenchiemsee, the third castle

A tour, or an idea, for people who come back: the third castle of Ludwig II, on the island in the Chiemsee in Bavaria. It only works together with a boat cruise, because the palace stands on an island. Great nature there, a great palace, it looks like Versailles in France.

Peace Bell, Seefeld, Leutasch and Mittenwald

An alternative to the main routes: not too much time in the car, wonderful views, stops in two completely different villages, and the walking on this tour is easy. First close to the Peace Bell at around 1100 metres, the largest bell outside a church tower in Austria, weighing 10,000 kilograms, with a breathtaking view of the mountains and the Inn valley. On to Seefeld, famous for winter sports and part of the Olympics, with a short tour and time for a coffee. Then through the Leutasch valley, a natural Tyrolean high valley, and through the gorge to Bavaria, where we stop in Mittenwald with its painted houses. Your guide takes you round there as well and you have time to eat or shop. Back to Innsbruck along a relatively steep mountain road with a good view.

Four Lakes tour in Bavaria

From May to November, starting in Innsbruck or Seefeld. You will not find this tour anywhere else, a trip away from the well known tourist spots but with a stunning landscape. We travel mostly through southern Bavaria on country roads. We see the Tatzelwurm waterfalls with their old Bavarian legend and the four lakes Schliersee, Tegernsee, Kochelsee and Walchensee, together with the famous town of Bad Tölz. Every one of these places has its own story to tell. We stop in beautiful villages and have plenty of time for good pictures. Perhaps you have never heard any of these names, but after the tour you will love them.

Where does the dollar come from?

A journey back to a time when copper and silver were mined on a large scale in Tyrol. From 1486 a special coin was struck from this silver, the Tyrolean Thaler, the ancestor of the dollar. We follow the path of the silver and the coin. First we visit the silver mine in Schwaz, where the guided tour begins with a train ride deep into the mountain. Then on to Hall in Tyrol to the Mint Tower, which stands in an old fortress dating from 1475. There is also time to explore the old town of Hall, which is larger than that of Innsbruck. In the Middle Ages "Hall" was a word for salt, which is a story of its own. Entrance fees are not included.
